HP's Optical Storage Server is a plug&play solution that brings over 22
gigabytes of information online for networked UNIX workstations. Using
NFS protocols, the Optical Storage Server can be accessed by any UNIX
workstation in seconds. It combines the storage performance of
Winchester disks and the high capacity of optical storage in a
reliable, affordable, centralized storage solution that can be shared
over the network.
The Optical Storage Server is a bundled HP systems solution that
integrates three 660 megabyte Winchester disks, the Model 20GB/A
optical disk library, and the HP9000 Model 345MH workstation with data
management software. The Winchester disks file systems are mounted
onto the clients' native file system where they appear as local storage
space. This is similar to any NFS file server. Clients are given
commands that enable them to migrate and demigrate their NFS store
files to optical storage. Files can also be migrated automatically by
the system administrator or a rules based process that can select files
for migration based upon those rules. This allows a certain level of
disk space to be kept free for new data. The old files are always
available online and returnable by the user.

Benefits
-Proven Reliability
-Reduced costs by..
-combining the capacity of optical storage with the performance of
Winchester
-improved productivity by keeping data online that used to go into a
tape library
-Easy to learn and use
-Easy to administer
-Sharable storage resource
-Control by the Administrator
-User accessiblity to their own files
Sell this optical storage solution when
-you have a customer who needs to keep Gbytes of data online in a
network of workstations with data ..
-that is infrequently accessed but needs to be kept highly available
-generated rapidly, but infrequently accessed such as logging test
results
-users want to have control over their own files
